What’s On Our Agenda?
- BACT is Back: The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is updating its Best Available Control Technology (BACT) guidelines and seeks RadTech input into the process. It has always been RadTech policy to help ensure that UV/EB technologies should be considered an option to meet regulatory guidelines, as appropriate.
- The RadTech EHS committee is planning a survey of members to help direct its activities. With concerns over the “new TSCA,” EU regulations, new materials and murmurs of a new RadTech FCN, we hope members participate in the survey later this year.
- RadTech Printer’s Guide-Revised and Updated. The popular RadTech Printers Guide, detailing the practical considerations and application of UV/EB to the printing industry, is under revision, with the creation of a new microsite scheduled in late 2016. We are working to create a valuable resource for RadTech members and customers.
- After a very successful UV LED event in 2015, RadTech now is planning the 2017 version, offering opportunities for unique networking and collaboration between material and equipment suppliers.
- Future needs for the automotive industry include lightweighting, 3D printing, new tech and increased focus on electronics materials – perfect opportunity for UV/EB? With a targeted session at SAE 2017 and increased contacts planned with the auto industry, the RadTech transportation sector is looking to develop new opportunities for the industry.
- Offering superior performance, multiple formats and a growing array of materials, UV/EB technology is poised for tremendous opportunities in 3D printing. The RadTech 3D printing committee is working to support future developments of the technology and expand opportunities for members.
Did you know…
…there is a RadTech Foundation, dedicated to the educational advancement of UV/EB technologies? 3M Corporation recently offered a generous donation to help support partners at the SUNY ESF Radiation Curing Program, which offers online learning opportunities in UV/EB.
The Foundation also is working to develop a unique “accelerator” to assist new and emerging companies with learning opportunities, mentorship and contacts in the UV/EB industry. Learn more at www.radtechfoundation.org.
Webinars Wanted
“The single greatest benefit RadTech provides,” enthused one member while touting his RadTech webinar. RadTech members are invited to submit an abstract to present a webinar. There is no charge, and we regularly register more than 100 sites to view the original webinar. In addition, they are archived and freely viewable any time online. All we ask is that webinars be noncommercial.
UV+EB Technology Editorial Board Adds Members
Two new members have been named to the RadTech Editorial Board, which has oversight responsibilities for UV+EB Technology.
Jin Lu holds a Ph.D. in fiber and polymer science from North Carolina State University and an MBA degree from Drexel University. After earning her doctorate, she continued her postdoc work at Nobel Laureate Alan McDiarmid’s lab at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2002, she started her industry career at Rohm and Hass as one of the pioneer members of a two-year technical leadership rotational program. Later, she was appointed to the emerging technology department, working on the next generation of AQUASETTM. She joined Sartomer in 2006 and has advanced to positions of increasing responsibility as technical leader and manager of the oligomer product line and adhesives, sealants and personal care platforms.
Gary A. Sigel holds a B.S. in chemistry/biology from Western Washington University and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of California, Davis. Post doctoral research on preceramic polymers to AlN/SiC solid solutions was conducted at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a principal scientist with Armstrong Flooring and has 28 years of UV/EB coating and adhesive formulation experience with Armstrong, including six years as a UV coatings specialist in the companys wood division. He currently is responsible for the development and deployment of new UV coating systems/processes for residential and commercial segments of the flooring business.
