In Memoriam: Dr. Eugene Valentine Sitzmann, Jr.

As our community gathers this year, we pause to honor the remarkable life and legacy of Dr. Eugene Sitzmann, Jr.—a brilliant chemist, beloved family member and cherished colleague whose sudden passing on March 11, 2025, has left a profound void in the world of photochemistry and beyond.

Eugene was more than just an expert in his field; he was a mentor, a friend and a guiding light for so many within RadTech and the broader scientific community. His warmth, intellect and unwavering dedication shaped not only the trajectory of photoinitiator chemistry, but also the lives of countless friends, student and collaborators.

A Scholar and Pioneer
Eugene’s academic journey began at Saint Thomas Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota, and continued through Northwestern University (B.S.) and the University of Chicago (Ph.D.), where he discovered his lifelong passion for chemistry. His love for learning was matched only by his commitment to sharing knowledge—first as a faculty member at Columbia University, and later as a frequent speaker at RadTech conferences, where his presentations on photoinitiators became must-attend events for both newcomers and seasoned experts.

His career spanned nearly two decades at CIBA, followed by eight years at BASF. Eugene’s expertise and fluency in German made him a highly respected figure, particularly among his European colleagues. His contributions to the field were not only technical but also deeply personal—he had a unique ability to bridge cultures and foster collaboration across borders.

A Colleague Remembered
Those who worked alongside Eugene recall his brilliant mind and tireless work ethic. “Eugene was the go-to expert when it came to photoinitiators,” shared a longtime RadTech collaborator. “His insight shaped so many of our projects, but it was his patience and willingness to mentor that truly set him apart. He never hesitated to answer a question or offer guidance, no matter how busy he was.”

Dr. Sitzmann was a 20-year veteran of CIBA and 8-years with BASF. Those colleagues remember him as a consummate professional whose integrity and generosity of spirit left an indelible mark. “Eugene’s passion for chemistry was matched only by his dedication to his team. He made everyone feel valued and inspired us to reach higher,” reflected a former coworker.

A Lasting Legacy
As we reflect on Eugene’s extraordinary life, we remember not only his scientific accomplishments, but also the joy, humor, and compassion he brought to every gathering. “He had a way of making even the most complex chemistry accessible and exciting,” recalled a fellow RadTech speaker. “But more than that, he made you feel like you belonged.”

The photochemistry community has lost a true pioneer, but we are all richer for having known Dr. Eugene Sitzmann, Jr. His legacy will live on in the discoveries he made, the lives he touched and the family and friends who loved him so dearly.

Eugene, may you rest in peace, your spirit forever illuminating the path for those who follow.
