Applications Open for RadLaunch Class of 2019

Start-ups, innovators and university researchers are eligible to apply for cash and travel grants as part of the RadLaunch Class of 2019 Educational Accelerator. With the rapid development of 3D printing, LEDs and sustainable materials, ultraviolet and electron beam technologies are taking center stage in developing new products and manufacturing processes.

Building on the successful start of the 2018 RadLaunch program, RadTech continues to foster growth of this initiative to identify and support unique technologies. Joining Mike Idacavage of Colorado Photopolymer Solutions as RadLaunch co-chair is Darryl Boyd, research chemist for the US Naval Research Lab. Applications are due by December 15, 2018, and the 2019 class will be introduced at the BIG IDEAS for UV+EB Technology Conference March 19 and 20, 2019, in Redondo Beach, California. RadTech Launches Introduction to UV LED Technology, a 10-Minute Educational Course

RadTech, the Association for UV+EB Technology, is launching the second in a series of free, email-based courses that will deliver educational lessons on various aspects of UV+EB technology. Each course will feature several lessons sent in a weekly email that should take roughly 10 minutes to read. The course, Introduction to UV LED Technology, was curated by Dr. Robert Karlicek – director of the Center for Lighting Enabled Systems and Applications and a professor of electrical, computer and systems engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute – in conjunction with the RadTech UV LED Technical Committee. The course features the following six lessons:

UV/EB Now Statewide BACT in CA

UV/EB technology has been listed as Best Available Control Technology (BACT) by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). As a member of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), RadTech received briefings about a BACT Clearinghouse for the entire state based on the most advanced pollution reduction technologies. The agency has just launched a Best Available Control Technology Clearinghouse as part of the effort to implement AB 617 – a new state law.

Building on the accomplishments at the local district (SCAQMD) level, RadTech submitted formal comments to CARB introducing the benefits of the technology and urging inclusion in the state clearinghouse. Most of the listings are from the determinations made by the SCAQMD which RadTech spearheaded. UV technology was included in the following categories:

  • Graphic Arts Printing and Coating Operation: Screen Printing & Drying
  • Graphic Arts Printing and Coating Operation: Flexographic Printing
  • Letterpress Printing (Printing Labels)
  • Flow Coater, Dip Tank & Roller Coater (Wood Coatings)

The determinations mean that UV/EB technology is considered BACT statewide and are an additional tool to inform permit applicants about the pollution prevention benefits of the technology. It is not a mandate of UV/EB processes exclusively. Facilities can choose other compliant alternatives such as afterburners and other low volatile organic compound (VOC) technologies. CARB’s seal of approval makes it easier for companies that choose UV/EB technology to obtain the necessary approval from regulatory agencies.
